Garlic: Your Autumn Herb with Health Superpowers

Garlic: Your Autumn Herb with Health Superpowers

We are currently on week two of our Pathogen, parasite and Heavy Metal online course. I promised our students in our class that I would re share this information that I have shared many times over the years. We love aged garlic and we love having it as a regular medicine at home.

Garlic has travelled through thousands of years and across every culture as one of humanity’s most trusted healing plants. In the old world, it was protection against vampires and evil spirits; in the modern world, it’s protection against pathogens, inflammation, and chronic disease.

When we say food is our first medicine, garlic is the perfect example. It strengthens resilience, supports cardiovascular health, clears the lungs, and helps the body defend itself against microbes, parasites, and even heavy metals. It’s a true winter ally—warming, stimulating, and deeply restorative.

Below you’ll find a simple recipe for making your own aged garlic, one of the most potent forms of this ancient herb.

Why Garlic Is Your Health Essential

Potent Against Pathogens

Garlic contains allicin and a suite of sulphur compounds that disrupt bacterial, viral, and fungal activity. These compounds help break down microbial membranes, reduce biofilms, and support the immune system’s natural ability to clear infections.

Parasite‑Clearing Power

Traditional medicine has long used garlic for intestinal parasites. Its volatile oils and sulphur chemistry create an environment in the gut that is unfavourable for helminths and protozoa, helping the body expel unwanted guests.

Heavy Metal Support

Garlic’s sulphur compounds can bind reactive metals such as lead and cadmium. They support glutathione pathways, reduce oxidative stress, and assist the body’s natural detoxification processes—especially when paired with hydration and fibre.

Lung & Respiratory Strength

Garlic warms and opens the chest. It helps break down mucus, supports circulation to the lungs, and assists the body in clearing respiratory pathogens. Perfect for seasonal coughs, congestion, and seasonal immune dips.

Cardiovascular & Circulatory Benefits

Aged garlic is especially known for supporting healthy blood pressure, improving circulation, and reducing oxidative stress in the cardiovascular system.

Digestive Fire & Bile Flow

Garlic stimulates digestive secretions, enhances bile flow, and supports gut motility—creating a digestive environment that is less hospitable to pathogens and parasites.

How to Make Aged Garlic

This is a traditional, simple, and incredibly effective preparation. Aged garlic becomes gentler, sweeter, and more medicinal over time.

Ingredients

Fresh garlic bulbs (around 500 g is a great batch size)

Method

Gather your garlic. Use as many fresh bulbs as you can—500 g is a good starting point.

Wash well. Leave the skins on but make sure the bulbs are clean and free of dirt.

Juice the garlic. Use a slow cold‑pressed juicer. Yes, you’re literally juicing whole garlic bulbs. It’s time‑consuming, but the medicinal potency is worth every minute.

Bottle it. Pour the garlic juice into a clean glass jar or bottle. Label it “Garlic Juice” and add today’s date.

Let it age. Store it in a cool, dark place for 6 months to 2 years. This slow transformation mellows the harshness and enhances the therapeutic compounds.

Optional: Speed it up with apple cider vinegar. Add a splash of ACV while juicing. This accelerates the aging process and gives you a delicious, medicinal garlic vinegar you can use sooner. Drizzle it over salads, soups, warm meals, or your favourite avo toast.
