Why is Plant Fibre in raw salads really good for me?
Share
Hello Medicine Room Family.
Its the height of summer, we all need nutrition and we need delicious foods that are good for us. Yes, its Salad season and its the perfect time to inspire us all with reasons why we want to eat salads and raw vegetables for our wellness.
How are you eating this summer? Have you been adding a good percentage of raw vegetables into your diet?
Have you been eating fibre daily and feeding your microbiome with nourishing and good nutrients?
Let's talk Salads and why they are so epic for your health.
The fibre in raw vegetables is incredibly beneficial for your microbiome because it acts as food for beneficial gut bacteria, which ferment the fibre and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs are crucial for gut health, helping to protect against harmful bacteria, regulate bowel movements, reduce inflammation, and support a diverse microbiome. Incorporating a variety of fibre-rich raw vegetables into your diet can significantly improve gut health and overall well-being.
Why is it healthier to eat raw vegetables as opposed to raw juices?
Eating raw vegetables is healthier than drinking vegetable juice because whole vegetables contain fibre, which is often lost during the juicing process. Fibre is essential for digestive health, helping to regulate bowel movements and feed beneficial gut bacteria. Additionally, eating raw vegetables requires chewing, which aids digestion and allows your body to better absorb nutrients. Whole vegetables also have a lower glycemic index, meaning they have a more gradual impact on blood sugar levels compared to juices. Consuming raw vegetables ensures you're getting all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in their natural form, providing a more balanced and nutritious intake.
You may want to have a juice cleanse and to have juices at certain times, but really when it comes to daily living and wellness, we are all better off eating the raw vegetables as a salad and enjoying their crispness and freshness as well as that epic fibre.
And how much plant fibre is optimal?
For good health, Adults should aim for about 25 grams to 35 grams of fibre daily Including a variety of fibre-rich vegetables in your diet can help you meet these goals. This is all vegetables and make sure you eat the skin after its been cleaned.
We have a few places left in our online Webinar this evening. The topic is emotions and stress
Make sure you dress your salads with good quality oils
Theres an old naturopathic saying about salads. Make sure you dress your carbs with some quality oil, such as cold pressed olive oil, add some vinegar such as apple cider vinegar and add a little salt to taste. This helps add fats to the vegetables which helps in digestion and also the vinegar with its lovely acids helps reduce insulin spikes. Don't add fake sugary and trans fatty salad dressings to your vegetables. Keep them healthy with quality home made dressings using the best ingredients.
